Internships

Thank you for your interest in The National Jazz Museum in Harlem. Our vibrant collections, programs and performances stimulate creativity and excitement about the past, present and future of jazz and its artists. NJMH internships offer an unparalleled opportunity to gain in-depth work experience with a not-for-profit organization that is a quickly expanding force for jazz in New York City and the world. As an Intern, you will be assigned short- and long-term projects based on your strengths. Unlike what one might expect from an internship at a large corporation, your contribution as an Intern will be essential to the advancement of the Museum’s mission.

Internships at the Museum are not paid positions. We currently offer three different internship semester opportunities: Spring Semester, Summer Semester, and Fall Semester. Applications are accepted on a rolling basis. Museum interns are expected to commit to a minimum of 15 hours per week and are highly encouraged to be involved with the Museum’s evening programs. Interns are selected based on academic achievement, interests, experience, and interviews. The best applicants will have exceptional interpersonal skills both on the telephone and in person. The application materials we need from you are listed below. Please send them to office1@jmih.org

  1. Your resumé and cover letter
  2. Two Letters of Recommendation
  3. A copy of your college transcript. This does not have to be an official registrar copy
  4. Forms from your college and relevant contact information to receive credit
  5. Relevant essays or projects

We will confirm receipt of your material and we will notify you only if you are selected to come to the museum for an interview. We understand that applicants may live outside of the New York area so if requested, we can grant a telephone or Skype interview.

If you have any questions, do not hesitate to contact us by phone at 212-348-8300, extension 100 or by email at office1@jmih.org with the subject line “NJMH Internship.” We look forward to receiving your materials.
