Bebo’s Greatest Student: Chucho Valdés
When Bebo left Cuba in 1960, he abandoned his career and family. His eighteen-year-old son Jesús “Chucho” Valdés, who had already replaced his father in the piano chair of Bebo’s Sabor de Cuba Orquesta, became the family’s sole support. The two reunited backstage at Carnegie Hall in 1978, and their relationship grew over subsequent decades into a very close collaboration in Bebo’s final years. This session looks at the career of Chucho Valdés, who became a towering pianistic figure in postrevolutionary Cuba — one of the world’s great pianists, with the discography to prove it.
