International Jazz Day with Jeffery Miller

What better way to celebrate International Jazz Day than with music by some of our favorite rising stars? Co-Artistic Director Jon Batiste curates the festivities, featuring bandleader Jeffery Miller.

Featuring:
Jeffery Miller, trombone, vocals
Joel Ross, vibes
Endea Owens, bass
Morgan Guerin, drums/saxophone
Jazzmeia Horn, vocals

At just 21, Jeffrey Miller has the resume of an old jazz cat. A student at The Juilliard School, the New Orleans native has performed with Donald Harrison, Herlin Riley, The Christian McBride Big Band, and most recently with the Wynton Marsalis Septet in Abu Dhabi. For three years he also appeared as music student Antoine Batiste in HBO’s Treme.

Jazzmeia Horn is the winner of the 2015 Thelonius Monk International Vocal Jazz Competition and 2013 Sarah Vaughan International Jazz Vocal Competition. Her artistry’s made her a mainstay on the scene, performing with Winard Harper, Junior Mance, Billy Harper, Vincent Gardner, Peter Bernstein, Ellis Marsalis and many others.

Joel Ross is a “bright young vibraphonist on his own rocket-like trajectory,” writes critic Nate Chinen of The New York Times. Still a student, the Chicago native has already performed with a long list of notable artists including Herbie Hancock, Christian McBride, Gerald Clayton, and the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra. An alum of the Brubeck Institute Jazz Quintet, he now studies at the New School under Stefon Harris.

Detroit native Endea Owens is a rising star bassist and masters student at The Juilliard School. She’s worked with the hip hop group, The Blat Pack, opening for Snoop Dogg at the Common Ground Festival. Recently, she was featured on ABC7 News on the segment “Here and Now” which played in 6,500 taxis across New York.

Growing up in a musical family, Morgan Guerin was given his first pair of drumsticks at the age of six months. By six, he had his first saxophone and throughout his life, he had the good fortune of being exposed to jazz from his “musical neighbors:” the Marsalis family, Donald Harrison, and Christian Scott, among others. He has shared the stage with Nicholas Payton, Ellis Marsalis, Herlin Riley, Jimmy Cobb, Esperanza Spalding, Allen Toussaint, Robert Glasper and more.
