Facebook Event: The Savory Collection – The Jam Sessions

Episode 3. The Jam Sessions
Monday, May  4th, 3pm – Facebook

Martin Block, one of the very first DJ’s in America, hosted some of the greatest musicians of the day for afternoon jam sessions – among the plyers were Louis Armstrong, Lester Young, Fats Waller, Lionel Hampton, Bunny Berigan, Benny Goodman, and Roy Eldridge. To be able to listen to these recordings in superb fidelity is as about as good as it gets.

About The Savory Collection

Ten years after its initial discovery that attracted international attention, The National Jazz Museum in Harlem offers a ongoing educational series sharing the treasures of The Savory Collection. Imagine radio broadcasts by Count Basie, Ella Fitzgerald, Fats Waller, and many other giants that were unheard for over 40 years!

Join NJMH Senior Scholar Loren Schoenberg and guests as they share not only the music but commentary on some of the greatest jazz sounds of the 1930’s and 40’s. While some of the selections have been included in NJMH’s albums that were released on iTunes and Mosaic Records, additional material will also be presented, including music from Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, Cab Calloway, and many others.

4. The Small Bands
Monday, May 11th, 3pm – Facebook

A handful of small groups attained fame for their championing of a chamber jazz sound even in the heyday of the big bands. Bassist John Kirby’s Sextet is a perfect example of restrained yet vitally swinging jazz, as were the various small bands from the big bands of Benny Goodman, Duke Ellington, and Tommy Dorsey.

5. The Singers
Monday, May 18th, 3pm – Facebook

By the late 1940’s, the big bands had mostly disappeared, and singers ruled the commercial roost. The Savory Collections contains many songs sung by band vocalists, many of which were the very best of the era. We’ll hear Ella Fitzgerald, Louis Armstrong (he was his own band vocalist!), Mildred Bailey, Leo Watson, Billie Holiday, and others.
