International Jazz Day with Mwenso and the Shakes
For this special 2018 International Jazz Day Celebration, Mwenso and the Shakes bring together musicians from five countries to celebrate the global reach of jazz with a special celebration of South African music.
Mwenso & The Shakes are an irrepressible musical force- part Sun Ra, James Brown, Kid Creole, Fats Wallers, and something alien altogether. Led by Sierra Leone-born, London-raised, and New York-based frontman and ringleader, Michael Mwenso, who the New York Times calls “a fervid vocalist and full-bore entertainer”, Mwenso & The Shakes take a past meets future meets distant future approach to jazz.
As Mwenso states, “You’re getting a generation of holistic musicians who love Louis Armstrong just as much as Woody Shaw, Sidney Bechet as much as Ornette Coleman. They want to be free in all styles of music—free in themselves. We’re figuring out ways to play this music as art, but as entertainment, too.” This freedom shines in their live shows that is a revue which includes tap dance, multiple vocalists (including the brilliant Vuyo Satashe), a full horn section and a rock solid rhythm section.
