Melissa Aldana with guest Pablo Menares
International Jazz Discussion and Live Music Series
To kick off our month of live music and discussion highlighting incredible international jazz artists making waves in the New York jazz scene there is no better fit than the young Chilean tenor star Melissa Aldana. Last year Melissa became the first woman to win the annual Thelonious Monk International Jazz Saxophone Competition and has since recorded two albums on Greg Osby’s record label, Inner Circle. Coming from a line of great Chilean saxophonists, Melissa started playing the jazz circuit in Santiago at 16 and quickly took her music to international jazz festivals where she met the great Panamanian jazz pianist, Danilo Perez. This connection led to her to the Berklee College of Music where she was awarded the Berklee Presidential Scholarship and had the chance to study with Joe Lovano, Greg Osby, George Garzone, and George Coleman among others. Melissa has played at The Village Vanguard, Blue Note, Iridium, Lincoln Center and the Jazz Gallery to name a few and currently leads the Crash Trio with Francisco Mela and fellow Chilean Pablo Menares. Menares will join in this session as well to accompany Melissa on a few tunes!
“One of my favorite sax players out there – period” – Greg Osby
