Paul West, Bassist
We were very proud to present an evening with a master musician whose career was nearing its 60th anniversary. Bassist Paul West began his long and varied musical career as a violinist, studying with Albert Polarioff from age 6 to age 18. After switching to the lower toned bass in the early 1950’s, Mr. West has performed with a plethora of greats, from Ray Charles, Billy Taylor and Dizzy Gillespie, to trios with Norman Simmons, Tommy Flanagan and Kenny Barron.
West, a quiet man of dignity, tapped into over a half-century of anecdotes at the Visitor’s Center of the NJMH in a rare interview.
