Special Exhibition: Afrolatinidad by Carlos Mateu
This exhibit is open to the public during regular museum hours: Thursday to Monday 11AM to 5PM.
Carlos Mateu was born in Havana, Cuba. He is known internationally as a visual artist and a dancer. He calls his art style “Pop Geometric.” His paintings fuse elements of cubism with realism, using straight lines and perspective to create a geometric and three-dimensional effect, while subtly deforming the images. Intense colors of acrylic are applied in layers like silkscreen, creating clean and precise divisions between tones, and textured further with oil pastel. He represents with symbols a surrealistic and mystical world around him. The National Jazz Museum in Harlem is excited to present the work of this extraordinary artist.
