Bebo Valdés – Giant of Cuban Music: Opening Night Reception
Join us for the opening reception on September 16th at 5:00pm.
When Bebo Valdés was born, the elders in the barrios of Cuba had been born in Africa. Cuba rang with musics African, European, Creole, and North American, while a new Cuban consciousness was continuing its long process of formation through music. Who were Bebo’s influences? What was the musical world he grew up in? Through archival, modern, and field recordings, we’ll look at Cuban musical culture in the early twentieth century.
