Remembering Geri Allen

June 29, 2017

The great pianist, composer and educator Geri Allen passed away this week from cancer.

In 2008, Allen sat down with Greg Thomas for an in-depth interview as part of our Harlem Speaks series. Her family, influences and mentors are the topics of  part one. After intermission, she delves into her recordings, her teachers, and her time at the Barry Harris Workshop, so significant in her development. Armed with a Master’s in Ethnomusicology, she explores the African influence in jazz. She also talks about the value of learning jazz standards and their influence on her as a composer. Then, to all our great surprise, she plays a several part invention inspired by a Bud Powell bebop tune.

Thank you, Geri. We miss you dearly.
