Ongoing SeriesHarlem in the Himalayas
Harlem in the Himalayas is the museum’s live jazz series, which has been serving audiences and artists to great acclaim since 2005. The concerts, presented with The Rubin Museum of Art, are a favorite feature of the Rubin’s K2 Friday nights, which lure concert-goers with free galleries, a DJ lounge, and specialty cocktails before and after the show. Jazz greats such as Fred Hersch, Ron Carter, Gary Peacock, Marilyn Crispell, Jason Moran, Jonathan Batiste, and Randy Weston, along with developing and emerging artists, have performed. This past year, the New York City Jazz Record named the Harlem performances led by Scott Robinson and David Binney in its top ten concerts of the year.
Harlem in the Himalayas supports jazz artists to present their music to diverse audiences in an innovative context. During the concert, each artist in the series responds musically to an artwork they have selected from the museum’s collection of Himalayan art, via composition or improvisation. This pairing supports the culturally cosmopolitan explorations already inherent in jazz, and creates a window for the audience into the musician’s creative process. The audience is invited to join a post-show gallery tour, led by a museum guide, which features the chosen artwork. This approach bridges music and visual art and echoes the institution’s cross-cultural emphasis, encouraging new ways of appreciating both art forms.
