Benny Goodman records “Texas Tea Party”

October 27

On this day in 1933, clarinetist Benny Goodman recorded “Texas Tea Party” featuring trombonist/vocalist Jack Teagarden. Texan trombonist Jack Teagarden was one of the early giants of jazz. He played and sang the blues beautifully; no wonder Louis Armstrong hired Teagarden as his featured trombonist for the first Armstrong All Star band. Here they are together from a 1951 film:

This is one of Tea’s early classics, recorded with Benny Goodman in 1933. And by the way, he’s not singing about the kind of tea you drink!
