Happy Birthday Albert Ayler!
Tenor saxophonist Albert Ayler (1936-70) represents in many ways the volcanic and troubled times of the 1960’s, both in his music and in his life, which culminated in a tragic suicide. Following in the wake of John Coltrane, Ornette Coleman and Cecil Taylor, Ayler found a new language to express on his tenor saxophone that was as old as it was new.
