Instruments select their players as much as the players select them and bassist Bob Cranshaw born on this day in 1932 in Evanston, IL., has exemplified the bass’s supportive and driving character for over 55 years.
Cranshaw’s personal sound has graced not only hundreds upon hundreds of jazz recordings and untold venues as Sonny Rollins’ bassist for 50 years, but also every episode of Sesame Street.

Another significant Cranshaw legacy is his ardent work driving for support for his fellow musicians through his decades long presence at Local 802 of the American Federation of Musicians.
