Happy Birthday Buddy DeFranco!

February 17

Happy 93rd birthday to Buddy DeFranco, a leading jazz clarinetist for the last 70 years!

Of all the instruments associated with jazz, the clarinet remains one of the least played. There are scores upon scores of well-known players of other instruments, but the clarinet, once one of the most popular, has become a relative rarity as a featured instrument.

DeFranco first gained attention during his stint with Tommy Dorsey’s band in the mid 1940’s. By the end of the decade, he was the predominant bebop soloist on the instrument, and already established as a bandleader.

We’ll celebrate his birthday listening to him with some of jazz’s greatest players.

With Gillespie, Davis, Parker, Tristano, Navarro, Johnson and others:

and one his greatest sessions, with ART TATUM!

Happy Birthday, Mr. DeFranco!
