Happy Birthday Wingy Manone
There was a plethora of New Orleans trumpeters who followed in Louis Armstrong’s wake in the 1920’s. We remember Joe “Wingy” Manone (1900-1982) today on his 116th birthday anniversary.
A year older than Armstrong, Manone was already recording in 1925, and this rare recording gives a fascinating glimpse into the white N.O. bands of the era – they’re swinging!
Manone lost an arm as a youth, hence his nickname, and his friend, prankster/violinist Joe Venuti once famously sent him one cufflink as a birthday present.
In 1930, Manone led a session issued under the name of Barbecue Joe and his Hot Dogs. Their TAR PAPER STOMP starts with a riff you may very well recognize:
It’s been a pleasure to remember a longtime jazz stalwart today – Wingy Manone.
