Today In Jazz
Happy Birthday Yusef Lateef!
Today would’ve been the 93rd birthday of composer/bandleader Yusef Lateef, born in Chattanooga, TN and who died in December 2013. Although Lateef played in many great bands, including those of Dizzy Gillespie and Cannonball Adderley, his most original contributions have been made through his own projects. One of the first and most accomplished jazz musicians to focus on non-traditional reed instruments, Lateef recorded one of his earliest classic albums, Jazz And The Sounds of Nature, on this date (and his 37th birthday) in 1957.
