McKinney’s Cotton Pickers

July 11

One of the best bands of the 1920’s came from Detroit – McKinney’s Cotton Pickers – and they made their debut record session on this date in 1928. With Don Redman as their musical director, the band quickly established itself as one of the best most technically accomplished of the entire era.

Crying and Sighing is typical of their swinging and advanced conception, as arranged by trumpeter John Nesbitt.

Here’s band playing the same piece just a few years ago, and it’s still not easy!
