Today In Jazz

The Shape of Jazz to Come

May 22

A sound that changed jazz forever was recorded for the first time precisely 55 years ago today.

Ornette Coleman recorded his LONELY WOMAN, with his band – Don Cherry, Charlie Haden and Billy Higgins. Just four years after Charlie Parker’s death, a new sound and concept made everything else in jazz sound different.

They recorded an entire album that day (The Shape of Jazz to Come) but this track sums it all up, and still sounds so fresh today.
